Helmet Laws to Change thanks to Jas Atwal
Further to my post of 26 February – “Helmet Laws Discriminate Sikh Man”, the State Government have announced that an amendment to the Transport laws will be made to allow for a religous exemption for the mandatory use of bicycle helmets.
This is a great step. The Transport Minister, Scott Emerson, made it clear that the case of Jas Atwal was influential in this review. Australia remains, however, one of the few countries in the world requiring the mandatory use of helmets. This recent amendment is a positive step towards greater civil liberties and individual choice.
